The next 100 Ladies who book a stay at Cardinal Ridge Ranch will receive a special gift upon arrival of this beautiful necklace from Chadds Ford Jewelry. A memory of the special connection between CRR and those loved ones who have passed.
The presence of colored stars on barns and homes is rooted in German folklore from long ago. While my personal heritage is from the Czech and Slovak regions of Eastern Europe, my Great-Great Grandfather lost an arm and a leg while fighting in the Prussian Army. Not wanting his sons to get drafted into that army, he emigrated to the US in the mid-1800’s to give them a better opportunity in life. I have a copy of my Great-Grandfather’s naturalization papers from 1893 where he had to “dis-avow allegiance” to the Prussian Emperor!
Cardinal Ridge Ranch is located just 9 miles west of the oldest German community in Texas – the town of Industry – which was founded in 1831. We are also 3 miles east of one of the oldest Czech communities in the state – Fayetteville. Indeed, the German and Czech heritages run deep through the area and Fayetteville is home to Lodge #1 of the SPJST. Official records indicate that SPJST (Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas) started operations on July 1, 1897, with 866 members and 25 charter lodges. SPJST received its state charter on August 12, 1897.
SPJST’s first base of operations was located here in Fayetteville. The central figure in administering the affairs of the Society, Secretary J.R. Kubena who is known as the “Daddy of the SPJST,” had his business located in Fayetteville. Until his death in 1938, Kubena administered the affairs of SPJST out of a single room in his general store. That building still stands and now hosts the Red & White Gallery on the square there.
The symbolism of the different colors for stars on the buildings of the countryside can be found in the hopes and dreams that the association might bestow upon the inhabitants, and these are reflected in the stars placed across the façade here at Cardinal Ridge Ranch!
In no particular order, the colors each represent the following:
Green – Fertility of the earth and family
Blue/Black – Protection for all who enter
White – Purity of soul and spirit
Violet/Purple – All things Holy
Brown – Friendship and Strength
Red – Emotion and passion - like I have for my Houston Cougars! (Okay … I made that last part up!)
So, as you visit and experience the hospitality of Cardinal Ridge Ranch, the hope is that you leave with a little bit of each colored star for your life!
